Red Sails in the Sunset (On Song 2) Curb Records
- CURCD 160
Belfast born, Brian is a popular singer and prolific songwriter who portrays
himself as one of Ireland's most successful ambassadors of music. This
CD contains 17 tracks, many of the songs having featured in his second
BBC Northern Ireland TV series `On Song'.
It is described as a `typically eclectic and marvellously entertaining
collection'. What that means in a practice is middle of the road `folk
music' which has the greatest appeal to the masses. We have `Red Sails
in the Sunset', `When You Were Sweet Sixteen' and a truly awful `Galway
Bay'. His light, high tenor voice takes him into Aled Jones territory
- `The Minstrel Boy'.
The most successful tracks for me are the duets. He joins Ralph McTell
for `Clare to Here' and Juliet Turner for a splendid `The Island'. Unfortunately
even Liam Clancy cannot save Irish Rover' - complete with off beat snare
drum.
