FOLK PROGRAM With: Simon Evans Website: www.bbc.co.uk/england/radiokent/simon_evans Meridian Hospital Radio Tony White  One of the most experienced broadcasters at Meridian Radio, Tony first joined the station in 1973 but despite various prolonged absences due to career commitments, he just kept coming back. His wide ranging musical tastes encompass everything from jazz and blues to rock, pop and the Classics. He worked as a journalist and broadcaster in both commercial and BBC radio. Tony also produced and researched TV documentaries. After working as a club DJ, Tony said he learned to be a radio presenter at Meridian Radio. There is a subtle difference, he said. Radio is a medium where you have an unseen audience and it is up to you to create the atmosphere. As someone once said, radio is a much more visual medium than TV. The pictures are better. It is the presenter's job to paint them. For 9 years Tony presented the Meridian Radio show on Thursday Nights at The Empire with his old friend, colleague and musical soulmate Mike Bartlett. Sadly Tony died on 30th May 2004. I had not seen him often over the last 15 years he had been a good friend and partner during the sixites running a portable disco unit for weddings and parties. Some of the club residents including myself, (Steve Jennings) often played live for the stations folk program. He leaves a widow Sally, and two children David and Lucy. This is my memorial to him.
